Drinks House 247 is a licensed alcohol retailer delivering across London 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Selling alcohol is a privilege granted under licence, and we take the responsibilities that come with it seriously. Every single delivery we make is subject to our Challenge 21 policy.
The legal minimum age to purchase alcohol in the United Kingdom is 18. Challenge 21 goes further: if the person receiving a delivery appears to be under 21, our driver will ask to see photo identification before handing anything over. Looking under 21 is not an accusation — it is simply the trigger for a check. Plenty of customers well over 18 are asked for ID, and that is exactly how the policy is meant to work.
Judging age by appearance is genuinely difficult, particularly at a doorstep, at night, in poor light, and often in a hurry. Challenge 21 removes guesswork from our drivers' hands. By setting the checking threshold three years above the legal age, we build in a margin that protects young people, protects our drivers from being put in an impossible position, and protects our licence. It is a standard adopted across responsible UK retail and it is applied here without exception.
We also work with the police in the areas we serve. Where we have reason to believe someone under 18 has attempted to buy alcohol, we may pass on a description and the contact and address details supplied with the order.
Please have one of the following ready when your delivery arrives:
Whichever you use, it must be the original document, in date, undamaged, and clearly showing your photograph and date of birth. We cannot accept photocopies, scans, screenshots, photographs of ID on a phone, student cards, travel cards or bank cards. Our driver may briefly examine the document; they will not retain it or record it beyond confirming the check took place.
If you appear to be under 21 and cannot produce an acceptable form of ID, our driver will refuse to complete the delivery and will return the alcohol to us. Our drivers have no discretion in this and are instructed not to negotiate. Please do not ask them to make an exception — they are following a policy designed to protect them.
Where a delivery is refused for this reason, the goods will be returned and your order will be dealt with by our customer service team. Any delivery charge already incurred may not be refundable in these circumstances. If a delivery to you has been refused, please call us on 0203 488 3266 or email sales@drinkshouse247.co.uk so we can look at your order.
It is a criminal offence in the UK to buy or attempt to buy alcohol on behalf of a person under 18. This is known as proxy purchasing. It applies even where the person placing and paying for the order is comfortably over 18.
If our driver has reasonable grounds to believe that alcohol is being bought for someone under 18 — for example, where under-18s are present and are clearly the intended recipients — the delivery will be refused, regardless of the age of the person who answers the door. Please do not put our drivers in that position.
It is also an offence to sell alcohol to a person who is drunk. Where our driver considers that the person receiving the order is intoxicated, they may refuse to hand over the delivery. As with age checks, this is a judgement our drivers are entitled and expected to make, and it is not open to negotiation at the door. Our drivers may likewise decline to complete a delivery where they feel unsafe or are subjected to abuse.
If you have any questions about our age verification policy, call us any time on 0203 488 3266 — we are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Please drink responsibly.
