A Guide to Pomerol

Pomerol is one of Bordeaux's smallest appellations, on the Right Bank next to Saint-Émilion. Its clay and gravel soils suit Merlot, which makes up most of every blend, often with a little Cabernet Franc. The result is red wine that is plush, velvety and generous, with plum, black cherry, truffle and chocolate.

No classification, many legends

Unlike the Médoc and Saint-Émilion, Pomerol has never had an official classification. Reputation alone sets the order, and its best estates are among the most sought-after wines in the world.

• Petrus: grown on a unique outcrop of blue clay; almost pure Merlot and one of the world's most collected wines.
• L'Évangile and La Conseillante: neighbours of Cheval Blanc, known for silky, perfumed wines.
• Certan de May and Petit-Village: classic, structured Pomerol on the plateau.
• Bourgneuf, Bonalgue and Fugue de Nenin: excellent value, and approachable younger.

When to drink

Thanks to Merlot's soft tannins, Pomerol is often enjoyable earlier than Left Bank Bordeaux. Most wines open up after 5–8 years, and top estates improve for 20 years or more. Half bottles mature a little faster, so they are great for trying a top estate sooner.

Serving and pairing
