A magnum holds 1.5 litres, the same as two standard bottles, and pours about twelve flutes. It brings a celebration together around one bottle, and it looks the part on a table or in a photo.
There is a reason many Champagne makers consider the magnum the ideal size. The neck is the same width as a standard bottle, so the wine inside has proportionally less contact with the air trapped under the cork. It ages more slowly and evenly, and keeps its freshness and fine bubbles for longer. Vintage Champagne in magnum is especially prized by collectors.
A magnum needs longer to chill than a standard bottle: allow four to five hours in the fridge, or 40 minutes in a large ice bucket filled with ice and water. Pour with one hand under the base and the thumb in the punt.
