A Guide to New Zealand Wine

New Zealand's vineyards are among the most southerly in the world. Long, sunny days and cool nights keep the grapes fresh and aromatic, so the country's wines are known for vivid fruit and crisp acidity. Almost all are sealed under screwcap, which keeps them fresh.

    Grapes and regions

    • Sauvignon Blanc: the country's signature, above all from Marlborough. Expect passion fruit, lime, gooseberry and fresh-cut grass. Try Cloudy Bay, Kim Crawford and Villa Maria.
    • Pinot Noir: silky and red-fruited, from Marlborough, Martinborough and Central Otago. Cloudy Bay and Villa Maria both make excellent examples.
    • Sparkling: traditional-method wines such as No.1 Family Estate's Blanc de Blancs, made in Marlborough by a family from Champagne.
    • Hawke's Bay: warmer North Island region known for Syrah, Chardonnay and Bordeaux-style blends.

    Serving and pairing

Serve Sauvignon Blanc at 8–10°C and drink it young, while it is at its freshest. It pairs beautifully with goat's cheese, asparagus, seafood and Thai food. Serve Pinot Noir slightly cool, at 14–16°C, with salmon, duck or mushroom risotto.
