    Pimm's No.1 Cup 70cl

    • English Fruit Cup · Gin Base · Since 1840

A gin-based fruit cup invented by a London oyster bar owner in 1840, and still the only drink that turns a jug, a cucumber and a warm afternoon into an event. Pimm's is less a spirit than a summer instruction — and the bottle every British household is briefly, urgently short of.

      The Story of the House
From an Oyster Bar in the City
      1840
James Pimm, a farmer's son running an oyster bar in the City of London, mixes a gin-based tonic and serves it in a small tankard — a "No.1 cup".
      The Recipe
Gin, a secret blend of herbs and liqueurs, and caramelised orange. The formula is still held by a very small number of people.
      The Cups
Others followed on other base spirits, numbered No.2 through No.6. The original gin cup outlasted almost all of them.
      The Ritual
Lemonade, cucumber, strawberry, orange and mint. Every British summer gathering runs on the same jug.

      Questions

      What actually is Pimm's?
A fruit cup: a gin base flavoured with a secret blend of herbs, liqueurs and caramelised orange, bottled at 25% so it can be mixed long. It was designed from the start to be diluted rather than drunk neat.
      What is the correct ratio?
One part Pimm's to three parts lemonade is the house standard. Some prefer one to two for a stronger jug. Fill with ice first, pour the Pimm's, then the lemonade, then the fruit — in that order, so nothing bruises.
      What goes in it?
Cucumber is non-negotiable. Then strawberry, orange slices and a generous handful of mint. Apple and lemon work too. Anything more than that and you are making a fruit salad.
Who is this a good gift for?
The host, the person with a garden, and anyone throwing a party. It is the least intimidating bottle in the shop — nobody has to know anything about it to enjoy it, which is precisely why it has lasted since 1840.
Can you deliver it directly to the person I'm gifting?
Yes — enter their address at checkout and add your message. In London it can be at their door within 30–45 minutes, any hour of the day. The recipient must be 18+ with ID for our Challenge 21 check.
