Eighty-year-old vines from a single plot on the Gevrey–Morey boundary, next door to the Charmes-Chambertin grand cru, made by a four-hectare domaine almost nobody outside Burgundy has heard of.
Domaine Henri Jouan is based in Morey-Saint-Denis and farms under four hectares in total — small even by Burgundian standards. It is run by Philippe Jouan, who took over from his father Henri, and the wines are made in tiny quantities with very little fuss.
Aux Echézeaux is a named plot, a lieu-dit, sitting right on the border between Gevrey-Chambertin and Morey-Saint-Denis and adjoining the Charmes-Chambertin grand cru. The vines are around eighty years old, which in Burgundy means small yields and real depth of flavour. This is Pinot Noir in its Côte de Nuits register: red fruit, earth and spice rather than weight.

Is this Echézeaux Grand Cru?
No, and the names are easily confused. Echézeaux is a grand cru in Vosne-Romanée. This is Aux Echézeaux, a separate named plot within Gevrey-Chambertin, several miles north. Different vineyard, different appellation.
Is it Chambertin?
No. Chambertin is a grand cru in its own right. This is Gevrey-Chambertin, the village appellation that takes its name from it — the plot does, however, sit immediately beside the Charmes-Chambertin grand cru.
What is a lieu-dit?
A named parcel of vineyard. Burgundy maps its land in extraordinary detail, and a grower will often bottle one plot separately because it tastes distinct.
How long will it keep?
2021 was a cool, classical Burgundy vintage. It is approachable now and should develop well over the next eight to ten years.
