      The Wine

La Garde comes from Pessac-Léognan, the gravel-soil heartland just south of the city of Bordeaux and the appellation that gave the region its first great red wines. The 2019 is a classic Left Bank blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, aged in French oak barrels.

It is full-bodied and generously fruited — ripe blackberry and cherry threaded with spice and a measured touch of oak — but the structure is what marks it out. Refined tannins and vibrant acidity carry the wine through a long finish, and give it the frame to keep developing in bottle.

Is it ready to drink now?

Yes. It is approachable today, and an hour in a decanter helps. The structure also allows it to be cellared further.

      What does Pessac-Léognan mean?

It is an appellation in the Graves district of Bordeaux, named for its gravel soils, which produce reds with a distinctive cedar and tobacco character.

What temperature should I serve it at?

16–18°C. Slightly below room temperature suits it best.
