Why is Chartreuse so hard to buy?
Because the Carthusian order decided not to grow. Faced with demand rising far beyond what they had ever made, the monks chose to cap production in order to protect their contemplative life rather than build a bigger distillery. Retailers now receive small allocations, and bottles move quickly.
What is the difference between Green and Yellow?
Green is the original: 55% ABV, intensely herbal, with real heat and a long menthol finish. Yellow is gentler at 40%, sweeter and more honeyed. If you are buying for a cocktail maker, Green is the one they want.
How do I make a Last Word?
Equal parts — 22.5ml each of gin, Green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur and fresh lime juice. Shake hard with ice and strain into a coupe. It is a Prohibition-era drink that came back from obscurity, and it is the reason so many people go looking for this bottle.
Does it really age in the bottle?
Yes — almost uniquely among spirits. Sealed bottles continue to develop for decades, softening and deepening, which is why aged bottles are collected and traded. Store it upright, away from light.
