Royal Tokaji Blue Label 5 Puttonyos Aszú 50cl

The wine of kings, and the king of wines — Louis XIV's phrase, not ours. Botrytised grapes picked berry by berry, kneaded into a paste and folded back into base wine, then aged in Hungarian oak. Apricot, honey and orange marmalade, held up by an acidity that keeps it from ever cloying.

      How It Is Made
      Picked Berry by Berry
      Noble Rot
Autumn mists off the Bodrog and Tisza rivers bring botrytis, which shrivels the grapes and concentrates their sugar and acidity.
      The Harvest
Affected berries are picked individually, by hand, over several passes through the vineyard — one of the most labour-intensive harvests in wine.
      Puttonyos
The aszú berries are kneaded to a paste and measured in puttony baskets into base wine. Five puttonyos means a richer, sweeter wine.
      Hungarian Oak
Years of ageing in the region's own oak, in cellars lined with a black cellar mould found almost nowhere else.

      Questions

      What does "5 Puttonyos" mean?
A puttony is the traditional basket used to carry botrytised aszú berries. The number tells you how many baskets of that concentrated paste went into each barrel of base wine — so five puttonyos is a richer, sweeter wine than three, and closer in intensity to the very top bottlings.
Is it too sweet to drink?
No, and this is the thing people are always surprised by. Botrytis concentrates acidity at the same time as sugar, so the wine finishes bright and clean rather than syrupy. It is one of the very few dessert wines you can drink a full glass of.
How long will it keep unopened?
Decades. The combination of high sugar and high acidity makes Tokaji Aszú one of the longest-lived wines in the world — bottles from the nineteenth century are still drinking. It will not go anywhere in your cellar.
Who is this a good gift for?
A wine lover, a keen cook, or anyone marking a birth year or anniversary — Tokaji is vintage-dated and ages for decades, so it is an unusually meaningful bottle to lay down. It also happens to be one of the great sweet-wine bargains.
Can you deliver it directly to the person I'm gifting?
Yes — enter their address at checkout and add your message. In London it can be at their door within 30–45 minutes, any hour of the day. The recipient must be 18+ with ID for our Challenge 21 check.
