Nyetimber 1086 2009 — six years on lees, two more after disgorgement, and only 2,600 bottles made.
Nyetimber has been growing vines in the West Sussex South Downs since 1988, and 1086 is the estate’s prestige cuvée — named for its first recorded appearance, as “Nitimbreha”, in the Domesday Book of 1086. Everything is estate-grown, and the fruit for 1086 is hand-selected from the finest parcels.
The 2009 blend is 46% Chardonnay, 43% Pinot Noir and 11% Meunier. The season progressed classically: excellent mid-June flowering, late-August véraison, then warm, sunny August and September conditions that brought the fruit to optimum ripeness. Traditional-method bottle fermentation was followed by six years on lees, disgorgement in July 2016 at 9 g/l dosage under Mytik Diam corks, and a further two years’ ageing after disgorgement. Only 2,600 bottles and 40 magnums were produced.
Serve with: seafood, poultry, or an occasion that warrants it. Superb now through 2034 and beyond.
