      The Wine

Domaine Jean-Jacques Girard is a family-run estate in the village of Savigny-lès-Beaune itself. This blanc comes from cooler, higher-elevation sites within the appellation, from vines planted in the 1980s on marl, sand and limestone — soils that stamp the wine with refreshing minerality and crisp acidity.

The 2021 is Chardonnay aged in oak barrels: ripe apple, citrus zest and honeyed apricot balanced by a firm, stony freshness, with toasted almond adding a gentle richness. Medium-bodied, smooth and elegant — white Burgundy character at a village price, and a lovely aperitif as well as a food wine.

      Questions

      Is Savigny-lès-Beaune usually white?

The village is better known for red, which makes its whites something of an insider’s pick — fresh, mineral and well priced for the Côte de Beaune.

What temperature should I serve it at?

10–12°C — cool but not ice-cold, so the almond and floral notes show.

      Drink now or keep?

Lovely now; it will also hold and gain subtle depth over the next few years.
