      The Wine

Château Figeac’s history reaches back to Roman times, and it stands today among the very top rank of Saint-Émilion as a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate. Unusually for the Right Bank, its gravel soils carry a large share of Cabernet: the wine blends Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in oak barrels.

That Cabernet backbone is what makes Figeac Figeac — a wine both powerful and elegant, red-fruited rather than jammy, with cedar, graphite and a hint of dark chocolate running underneath. The 2020 has silky, well-integrated tannins and a very long life ahead, and the half bottle lets you visit a legendary estate without the full-bottle commitment.

      Questions

What makes Figeac different from other Saint-Émilion?

Its gravel soils and unusually high proportion of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, which give a fresher, more structured style than the typical Merlot-dominated Right Bank wine.

      Drink now or cellar?

The 2020 can be opened now with a long decant, but it is built for the cellar and will improve for many years.

How much is in a half bottle?

37.5cl — half a standard bottle, roughly two generous glasses.
