The Widow Who Reinvented Champagne
1772
Philippe Clicquot founds the house in Reims, trading wine alongside textiles and banking.
1805
Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin is widowed at 27 and takes command — one of the first women ever to run a champagne house.
1816
She devises the riddling table, the technique that finally made champagne brilliantly clear. Every house still uses it.

Why is it called Veuve Clicquot?
"Veuve" is French for widow. Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin was widowed at 27 in 1805 and took over the house herself, going on to invent the riddling table and build one of Champagne's great names. The label carries her title.
What makes Yellow Label different from other Brut NV champagnes?
Two things: it is dominated by Pinot Noir, which gives it more structure and body than lighter Chardonnay-led styles, and it uses a high proportion of reserve wines — up to 45%, drawn from several past harvests — to keep the house style consistent year after year.
What is La Grande Dame?
The house's prestige cuvée, named in honour of Madame Clicquot. It is made only in exceptional years, predominantly from Pinot Noir grown in historic Grand Cru plots she herself acquired.
What is Veuve Clicquot Rich?
A champagne deliberately made to be served over ice and mixed — higher in dosage, designed to be poured into a large glass of cubes and garnished. Unusual, and genuinely excellent in summer.
