Scandinavia's national spirit — a grain or potato base flavoured principally with caraway or dill, plus supporting botanicals. Think of it as gin's savoury cousin: same idea, entirely different direction. Linie is the aged, golden style rather than the clear one.
Does the sea voyage actually change it?
It does. Constant motion keeps the liquid working against the wood far more than a still warehouse cask, and the swing from tropical heat to North Sea cold pushes it in and out of the staves. The result is rounder and more integrated than land-aged aquavit of the same age.
