One of the great estates of the Médoc, in a vintage critics scored up to a hundred points. Cabernet Sauvignon at its most precise: cassis, cedar and graphite over a spine of fine tannin.
Ducru-Beaucaillou takes its name from the beaux cailloux — the beautiful stones — of the deep gravel bank it sits on, overlooking the Gironde at Saint-Julien. It was ranked a Second Growth in 1855 and is widely held to be performing at First Growth level today, which is why its wines are collected as seriously as they are drunk.
The 2020 is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot. It is a classically proportioned Saint-Julien rather than a showy one: blackcurrant and cedar, graphite and fine, tightly woven tannin, with the length that separates the great estates from the good. Decanter awarded it 99 points, Jeb Dunnuck a perfect 100, Vinous 98 and James Suckling 97.
"Beautiful stones" — a reference to the deep bed of gravel the vineyard sits on. That gravel drains hard and forces the vines deep, which is the making of great Cabernet Sauvignon.

The second tier of the 1855 classification of the Médoc. Ducru-Beaucaillou is among the handful of Second Growths now widely considered to be performing at First Growth level.
Should I open it now or keep it?
It can be enjoyed now with several hours in a decanter, but a 2020 of this quality has decades ahead. Most buyers will want to cellar it.
