Is this too smoky for someone new to Islay?
No — and that is precisely why it won. Twenty-one years and a Pedro Ximénez finish round the peat into something closer to woodsmoke over dried fruit than the medicinal punch of a young Islay. It is the bottle to convert someone with, not the one to frighten them with.
What does the Pedro Ximénez finish actually add?
PX is the sweetest, darkest sherry there is. A final rest in first-fill PX casks lays raisin, fig and dark chocolate over the whisky, giving it a viscous, almost dessert-like weight that carries the smoke rather than being buried by it.
Should I keep it or open it?
Open it. Whisky does not improve in the bottle, and a World's Best Single Malt is a poor thing to admire through glass. If it is a gift for a collector, the presentation box shows well on a shelf either way.
Why is a 21-year-old Islay so much more expensive?
Roughly two per cent of each cask evaporates every year. After twenty-one years a meaningful share of the original spirit is simply gone, and the casks that survive that long in good condition are a small minority. You are paying for time and for attrition.
