      The Wine

      R. López de Heredia’s Viña Tondonia was founded in 1877 by Don Rafael López de Heredia and is among the oldest and most respected bodegas in Rioja. Its reputation rests on a refusal to modernise: long ageing in American oak, patience over efficiency, and wines released only when the house judges them ready.

The 2011 Reserva is Tempranillo-led (75%) with Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo, aged six years in American oak barrels. It is medium-bodied and beautifully savoury — dried figs, cherries and red berries against vanilla, leather and sweet spice, with cedar, tobacco and an earthy undertow emerging as it breathes. Refreshing acidity, silky texture, and a long, persistent finish.

      Questions

What makes Tondonia different from modern Rioja?

Very long ageing in American oak and a traditional, unhurried approach. The wines are savoury, delicate and aromatic rather than dark and extracted.

      Is it ready to drink?

Yes. The bodega releases only when the wine is ready — six years in barrel means it arrives mature.

      Should I decant it?

A gentle 30-minute decant helps, poured carefully off any sediment. Serve at 16–18°C.
