      The Wine

Château du Domaine de L’Eglise is one of Pomerol’s oldest estates, working a compact seven-hectare vineyard of gravelly clay planted with vines now sixty to seventy years old. Old vines yield less and concentrate more, and on Pomerol’s clay that translates into the depth and silky texture the appellation is known for.

The 2019 is 98% Merlot with 2% Cabernet Franc, aged up to 18 months in French oak, 40% of it new. It opens with layers of dark fruit, wild berries and warming spice, then unfolds across a silky, beautifully textured palate held by firm, polished tannins. Leather, vanilla, coffee and oak add earthy sophistication, and the finish stays juicy and balanced rather than heavy.

      Questions

      Why do old vines matter?

Older vines naturally produce smaller crops of more concentrated fruit, and their deeper roots cope better with weather extremes — both of which show up as depth in the glass.

      Drink now or cellar?

Both. The 2019 is approachable with a decant, and the structure supports several more years of development.

How long should I decant it?

Around an hour, served at 16–18°C.
