      The Wine

Gérard Bertrand is the Languedoc’s most visible champion, and Orange Gold is his take on one of wine’s oldest styles: white grapes fermented on their skins, the ancient technique behind “orange” wine. The 2021 is fermented and aged in amphorae and blends Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Muscat.

The skin contact gives it its glowing colour, gentle tannic grip and remarkable aromatic reach: pink grapefruit and stone fruit, orange peel, exotic spice and a violet-like floral lift. Medium-bodied, round and textured with crisp acidity — a wine that handles spice-laden food better than almost any conventional white.

      Questions

      What is orange wine?

White wine made like a red — the juice ferments with the grape skins, gaining colour, texture and gentle tannin.

What temperature should I serve it at?

10–12°C — cooler than a red, slightly warmer than a crisp white, so the spice and texture show.

      Is it sweet?

No — despite the honeyed aromas it is a dry wine with fresh acidity.
