      The Wine

This Saint-Émilion carries the name of Alain Dutournier and comes from the 2009 vintage — one of the most celebrated years of the modern era in Bordeaux, ripe and generous across both banks. The blend is classic Right Bank: Merlot with Cabernet Franc, aged in oak barrels.

Now well past fifteen years old, the wine is in a fully mature phase. The ripe black fruit of 2009 has deepened and taken on cedar, tobacco and truffle; the tannins have melted to velvet; and the finish lingers with quiet, savoury elegance. Mature claret at this stage needs nothing but a careful pour and a good table.

      Questions

Is a 2009 still good to drink?

Yes — 2009 was an outstanding, ripe vintage and this wine is in its mature drinking window now.

How should I serve an older wine?

Stand the bottle upright for a few hours, pour gently to leave any sediment behind, and decant briefly rather than for hours.

What temperature should I serve it at?

      16–18°C — cool room temperature.
