      The Wine

Grange is the wine that put Australia on the fine-wine map, and Penfolds has made it with the same conviction for decades: a Shiraz-dominant blend drawn from across South Australia rather than a single vineyard, matured in oak, and built above all to age. The 2018 is deep garnet-red, and the colour alone tells you about the concentration.

The nose is an intricate tapestry — ripe blackberry and plum threaded with dark chocolate, espresso and exotic spice. The palate is full-bodied and velvety, layering rich dark fruit with savoury herbs, toasty oak and earthy undertones over firm but supple tannins. In magnum, the wine ages more slowly and more gracefully still: this is a bottle for a cellar and a landmark occasion.

      Questions

      Why does a magnum matter?

The same volume of air sits above twice the wine, so a magnum ages more slowly and more evenly — the preferred format for long cellaring.

      Drink now or cellar?

Grange is famously long-lived. It can be opened now with several hours’ decanting, but the 2018 will reward decades in the cellar.

What temperature should I serve it at?

16–18°C. Warmer than that and the alcohol dominates the fruit.
