Harlan Estate 2018 — cassis, graphite and violets from one of California’s most sought-after names.
Harlan Estate sits in the western hills of Napa Valley and has spent decades building a reputation that puts it among the most collected wines in California. The approach is Bordelais in spirit — a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged 24 to 30 months in French oak barrels.
The 2018 pours a dense purple. What lifts it above sheer Napa power is the detail: cassis and blackberry at the centre, then graphite, crushed stone, violets and a curl of tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, it holds power and elegance in genuine balance, with a velvety texture, well-integrated tannins and a very long finish. A wine to keep, and to open for something that matters.
Serve with: grilled ribeye, roast lamb, Wagyu beef, savoury mushroom dishes or aged cheeses.

Both work — a long decant opens it beautifully today, and the structure supports many years of further development.
Two to three hours for a wine of this concentration and age.
16–18°C. Serving too warm pushes the alcohol forward and flattens the aromatics.
