      The Wine

Les Forts de Latour is the second wine of Château Latour, one of the great estates of Pauillac. It is made from older vines and from parcels not selected for the grand vin — the same team, the same terroir, the same standards of selection, in a wine that opens earlier. Its reputation is such that it would be a fine wine under any name.

The 2000 vintage is one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated, and this bottle shows why. Deep garnet-purple, it offers ripe blackcurrant and juicy plum lifted by candied violets, cardamom and crushed rock. The palate is medium to full-bodied, balancing Cabernet Sauvignon’s power against Merlot’s roundness, with concentrated dark fruit, earth and spice over lively acidity and ripe, velvety tannins. It will continue evolving for decades.

      Questions

      What is a second wine?

A separate bottling from the same estate, made from lots not chosen for the grand vin — here from older vines. It carries the house style at a more accessible price and matures sooner.

Is a 2000 still drinking well?

Yes. 2000 was an outstanding Bordeaux vintage and this wine is fully mature, with the structure to keep developing.

How should I handle an older bottle?

Stand it upright for several hours, decant gently off the sediment, and give it 45–60 minutes before serving at 16–18°C.
