What is a "sherry bomb"?
A whisky matured heavily in ex-sherry casks, which give it dried fruit, chocolate and spice instead of the vanilla and coconut you get from bourbon barrels. GlenDronach 12 is widely regarded as the benchmark entry point to the style — and one of the best value bottles in it.
What is the difference between PX and Oloroso?
Pedro Ximénez is the intensely sweet, raisiny sherry; Oloroso is drier, nuttier and more structured. Using both gives GlenDronach its signature balance — the sweetness of one held up by the backbone of the other.
Is the colour natural?
The depth of colour here comes from twelve full years in sherry wood rather than a short finishing period. Full maturation is slower and more expensive than finishing, and it is why the flavour goes all the way through rather than sitting on top.
Is this a good first serious whisky to gift?
One of the best. It is generous, sweet-edged and immediately likeable, with no peat to divide opinion — but it has enough complexity that an experienced drinker will respect it. The presentation box makes it look the part straight out of the bag.
