Arturo Vaccari, a distiller in Livorno, blends a golden herbal liqueur and names it for Giuseppe Galliano, an Italian officer whose stand in Abyssinia had made him a national figure.

Strength and balance. L'Autentico is bottled at 42.3% — the original proof — which keeps the herbal and anise notes in play behind the vanilla. The lower-proof Vanilla expression is sweeter and softer. Bartenders reach for this one.
What does it taste like?
Vanilla arrives first, then star anise, lavender and cinnamon, with a citrus-peel lift and a long warm finish. Thirty-odd botanicals, but they resolve into something surprisingly singular.
How do I make a Harvey Wallbanger?
Vodka and fresh orange juice over ice in a tall glass, stirred, then a bar measure of Galliano floated gently on top so it sits as a golden layer. Do not stir it in. An orange slice and a cherry, if you are doing it properly.
