1936 Bière — a Swiss lager from an Appenzell family brewery, and a name almost nobody in London has on their shelf.
Switzerland is not where most people look for beer, which is rather the point. 1936 Bière comes from Brauerei Locher in Appenzell — a family brewery running since 1886, now in its fifth generation — and it is made in the Helles tradition: pale, soft and malt-led rather than hop-driven. Clean bread-crust malt, a gentle floral hop lift, no bitterness to speak of and a finish that stays bright. It is the kind of lager that disappears quietly over an evening and leaves people asking what it was. A case of 24 × 330ml bottles.
Cold but not icy — Helles rewards a little warmth.
Alpine cheeses, raclette, a decent Gruyère.
Cured meats and good bread.
Something guests will not have tried before.
