      The Wine

Château Lafite Rothschild needs no introduction: a First Growth of Pauillac, 107 hectares in the Médoc, and for two centuries the reference point for what Bordeaux at the very top can be. Where other First Growths impress by force, Lafite works by architecture — sculpted, elongated, deliberately understated.

The 2020 blends 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, vinified under technical director Eric Kohler and aged in 100% new oak. Jane Anson awarded it 97 points, describing a “delicious wine with... tons of understated power”. Drink 2025 to 2050 and beyond.

      Tasting Notes

NoseClassic Lafite: pencil lead, crushed mint leaf, blackcurrant, graphite and subtle floral spice.
PalateMedium to full-bodied with elongated, finely balanced tannins and a slate-scraping texture — blue-purple fruit, lavender, sage and mocha in harmonious layers.
FinishLong and vibrant, with understated power and real acidity.

Serve with: veal, pork, beef or game. Decant well ahead if opening in the next few years.

      Questions

Should I open it now or cellar it?

It is approachable from 2025 with a long decant, but this is a wine built for the long haul — 2050 and beyond is realistic. Cellaring rewards you.

How is Lafite different from the other First Growths?

Restraint. Where Latour is powerful and Mouton is opulent, Lafite is about line, length and finesse — the pencil-lead and graphite signature rather than sheer weight.

Does 100% new oak overwhelm it?

No. At this concentration the oak becomes structure rather than flavour; within a few years it is fully absorbed into the wine.
