      The Wine

Nyetimber planted its first vines in 1988 and has since become one of England’s most celebrated producers. 1086 is its prestige cuvée, named for the estate’s first recorded mention — as “Nitimbreha” — in the Domesday Book of 1086. It is made exclusively from estate-grown grapes in West Sussex, with the finest parcels hand-selected for the rosé.

The 2010 blend is 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay. The season gave a drier winter, excellent flowering in hot, dry conditions, cooler August rains and bright September ripening — conditions that produced delicate, fine flavours. After traditional-method bottle fermentation it spent five years on lees, disgorged June 2016 at 8 g/l dosage under Mytik Diam technical corks. Only 850 magnums were produced.

      Tasting Notes

NoseVibrant red fruits — strawberry and raspberry — with floral notes.
PalatePale pink, silky and elegant, with a creamy texture and great tension between fruit and structure.
      FinishLong and persistent.

Serve with: seafood, poultry, a serious celebration — or a quiet hour on its own. Superb now through 2038 and beyond.

      Questions

      Is this Champagne?

No — it is English Sparkling Wine from West Sussex, made by the traditional method from estate-grown fruit. Champagne is a protected French appellation.

      Why the name 1086?

Nyetimber appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Nitimbreha”. The cuvée is a nod to nearly a millennium of recorded history on the site.

      Is the magnum worth it?

For a wine like this, yes — large formats age more slowly and more gracefully. With 850 magnums in existence it is also a genuine collector’s bottle.
