Kweichow Moutai Flying Fairy Baijiu 50cl

    4.8 ★ · 223 Google Reviews
    • Chinese Baijiu · Maotai Town, Guizhou · Sauce Aroma

The world's most valuable spirits brand, and the bottle that appears whenever something significant is being agreed in China. Moutai is fermented and distilled nine times over a full year, then aged at least four before blending — a soy, mushroom and toasted-grain intensity that exists nowhere else in drinks.

A Spirit You Cannot Make Anywhere Else
      Maotai Town
A humid river valley in Guizhou, sunk below the surrounding hills. The microbial life in that air is part of the recipe — attempts to replicate Moutai elsewhere have consistently failed.
      One Full Year
Red sorghum is fermented eight times and distilled nine, over twelve months, with wheat qū starter and stone fermentation pits.
      Four Years' Rest
The seven distinct spirit runs are aged separately in earthenware jars before anyone is allowed to blend them.
      The Blend
Master blenders marry the runs with older reserve stock — no water added, which is why it bottles at 53%.

      Questions

      What is baijiu?
China's national spirit, distilled from grain — usually sorghum — using a solid-state fermentation process with a starter culture called qū. It is by volume the most consumed spirit category on earth, and almost unknown in most British homes.
      What does "Flying Fairy" mean?
It is the Feitian label — the flagship expression, named for the flying apsara figures of Buddhist art shown on the bottle. It is the standard bearer for the brand and the one collectors and gift-givers look for.
What does it actually taste like?
Nothing else. Soy sauce, dried mushroom, toasted sesame and overripe tropical fruit, with a long savoury finish. It is emphatically not sweet, and first-time drinkers should approach it the way they would an intense aged cheese — as something to work out, not gulp.
Who is this a good gift for?
It carries enormous weight as a business or hospitality gift, particularly in Chinese cultural contexts where it signals genuine respect. It is also the obvious gift for a serious spirits collector who has never owned a bottle — and there are many.
Can you deliver it directly to the person I'm gifting?
Yes — enter their address at checkout and add your message. In London it can be at their door within 30–45 minutes, any hour of the day. The recipient must be 18+ with ID for our Challenge 21 check.
