Seventy One Gin with six black Ernesto tapers from Maison Trudon — leather and tobacco against Queen of the Night.
Seventy One Gin was created by fashion photographer Mert Alas and conceived like a fragrance: each botanical is distilled separately before being brought together in balance, which is a perfumer’s method rather than a distiller’s. At its heart sits the rare Queen of the Night cactus flower — it blooms only after dark and wilts by dawn — alongside rose petals, grapefruit peel and classic gin botanicals. The spirit then rests 71 nights in oak, drawing out gentle vanilla and a rounded richness.
Completing the set are six black Ernesto taper candles from Maison Trudon, whose notes of leather and tobacco turn out to be an unexpectedly natural companion to the gin’s aromatics. On paper it is an odd pairing; in practice the two work together entirely.
Serve with: ice and a light tonic, or in a Martini. Light the candles first — the pairing is the point of the set.

It is a perfumer’s technique. Distilling individually and then blending gives far more control over the balance than macerating everything together and hoping.
A cactus flower that blooms only after dark and wilts by dawn. Its rarity and its nocturnal habit are the whole conceit behind the gin.
