Chenin Blanc from vines most of California forgot it had. Herzog's Prince Vineyard bottling comes from old Clarksburg vines in the Sacramento River Delta — quince, pear and honeysuckle held together by bright acidity — and it is fully kosher, from a family who have made wine for nine generations.
Chenin Blanc was once everywhere in California and almost all of it went into anonymous blends. The old vines that survived now make some of the state's most characterful whites.

Chenin Blanc from California — really?
Really. Chenin was once California's most-planted white, then quietly ripped out for Chardonnay. The old vines that survived — many around Clarksburg in the Sacramento Delta — now make wines with genuine character, and they're a favourite of sommeliers looking beyond the obvious.
What does it taste like?
Quince and ripe pear with honeysuckle lift, cut by the bright acidity Chenin is loved for. Dry, fresh and textured — closer to a good Loire white than to a fat Californian Chardonnay.
