      The Wine

Grand-Puy-Lacoste sits west of Pauillac on exceptional coarse gravel-limestone soils, with superb drainage and heat retention and vines averaging around 38 years old. Fruit is hand-picked, and the varietal make-up is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc — firmly Cabernet-dominant, as Pauillac should be.

The 2019 saw around three weeks of maceration followed by 16 to 18 months in French oak, 75% new. It is concentrated and structured with signature Pauillac typicity, and it earned 96 points from both Jane Anson and Robert Parker. Rich, serious and elegant in equal measure.

      Tasting Notes

NoseSlow-building and rewarding — violet and peony over black fruits, pencil lead, cloves, liquorice and cocoa bean.
PalateMuscular yet tempered: knitted-down tannins form a firm wall around a concentrated dark fruit core, with floral lift, spice, graphite minerality and cocoa depth.
      FinishLong, powerful and aromatic.

Serve with: veal, pork, beef, lamb or game. Drink from 2025–2026 to 2045 and beyond.

      Questions

How does 2019 compare to 2018 here?

2019 is the more floral and aromatic of the two, with a firmer tannic frame. 2018 is riper and more immediately generous. Both are excellent.

What does three weeks of maceration achieve?

Extended skin contact extracts more colour, tannin and aromatic compounds. It is part of why the 2019 is so inky and concentrated.

      Is it ready now?

From 2025 or 2026 with a long decant. It has decades ahead of it.
