A Guide to Saint-Émilion

Saint-Émilion is a medieval hilltop town on Bordeaux's Right Bank, and with its vineyards it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its limestone plateau and clay slopes suit Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which give wines that are supple, fragrant and full of red and black fruit.

Understanding the labels

• Saint-Émilion Grand Cru: an appellation with stricter rules than plain Saint-Émilion. It is not a classification, despite the name.
• Grand Cru Classé: estates ranked in the Saint-Émilion classification, which is reviewed about every ten years.
• Premier Grand Cru Classé: the top rank. Château Figeac was promoted to the highest level, "A", in 2022. It is unusual for its high share of Cabernet, which gives it great freshness and length.
• Satellites: neighbouring villages such as Montagne-Saint-Émilion offer the same style at gentler prices; try Château Teyssier.

When to drink

Good Grand Cru wines are usually enjoyable from about 5 years and keep for 15 or more; top classed growths last for decades. Older vintages such as 2005 and 2014 are drinking well now.

Serving and pairing

Decant younger wines for an hour and serve at 16–18°C. Saint-Émilion is excellent with roast lamb, duck, game and mushroom dishes.
