Saint-Julien is the most consistent commune in the Médoc. It has no First Growths and almost no weak estates — what it has instead is a run of classed growths that deliver year after year, with a house style poised between the power of Pauillac and the elegance of Margaux. Branaire-Ducru was ranked a Fourth Growth in the 1855 classification and has spent the last three decades out-performing that rank.
2022 was a hot, dry, remarkable year that produced Bordeaux of unusual concentration without losing freshness. This is Cabernet Sauvignon-led, filled out with Merlot and a little Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Expect blackcurrant, pencil shavings, graphite and tobacco, with leafy herbs underneath. It is drinkable now with a decant, but it is really a wine for 2028 onwards.

What is a Fourth Growth?
A rank in the 1855 classification of the Médoc, which sorted the great estates into five tiers. The ranking has barely changed since, and many Fourth Growths — Branaire-Ducru among them — now drink well above their tier.
Was 2022 a good vintage?
Exceptional. A hot, dry summer gave wines of real concentration, and the best estates kept freshness alongside it. Scores across Bordeaux were among the highest on record.
Can I drink it now?
Yes, with a decant of an hour or two, but it is built to age. From 2028 it will show considerably more.
How should I store it?
On its side, somewhere cool, dark and stable. This is a wine worth keeping properly.
