      The Wine

Château Palmer is a Third Growth that has long drunk above its 1855 rank, and its 55 hectares in the southern Médoc sit on magnificent gravelly soils studded with quartz stones — excellent for heat retention and drainage alike. The vines average over 38 years old. The estate has been fully biodynamic since certification in 2018, working with minimal intervention and gravity-led handling in the cellar.

The 2022 is a classic Palmer blend: 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Ageing is unusual and deliberate — French oak barrels including a proportion of new wood, followed by a second year in large oak foudres. The foudres preserve freshness and keep the wood influence in check, which is much of why Palmer tastes the way it does.

      Questions

What are foudres and why use them?

Large oak vessels, far bigger than barriques. The lower surface-area-to-wine ratio means much less wood influence, so a second year in foudre builds integration and preserves freshness rather than adding oak flavour.

      What does biodynamic mean here?

Palmer farms its full 55 hectares biodynamically and has been certified since 2018 — no synthetic inputs, with the vineyard treated as a single living system.

      When should I open it?

2028 onwards. It is a wine that needs time; earlier, decant for several hours.
