Château Palmer 2021 — a Merlot-led Palmer of real finesse, and proof of what the estate can do in a difficult year.
Château Palmer’s 55 hectares sit on sandy-gravelly soils overlooking the Gironde estuary, with some vines over seventy years old. It is a Third Growth by the 1855 classification and consistently drinks well beyond that rank — something the 2021 demonstrates more clearly than an easy vintage ever could.
2021 was a challenging year across Bordeaux, and this is where careful farming earns its keep. The blend leans Merlot at 56%, with 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot, and the wine that results has vivid ruby-violet colour, inky depth and supple, well-integrated tannins. Jane Anson awarded it 96 points, calling it “entirely Palmer in character” with a “mouthwatering finish”.
