      The Wine

Clos du Marquis draws on a historic Saint-Julien estate with roots in the nineteenth century, the label first appearing in 1902. The fruit comes from parcels sitting within the commune’s finest neighbourhood, close to Château Léoville Las Cases and Château Talbot, and the 2019 blends Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc in the classic Left Bank mould.

Aged in oak barrels, it is full-bodied without heaviness: dark fruit at the core, cedar and fine tannin around the edges, and the freshness that marks the 2019 vintage in Bordeaux. The half bottle is the ideal format for two people over dinner, or for anyone wanting to taste a serious Saint-Julien without committing to a full 75cl.

      Questions

How much wine is in a half bottle?

37.5cl — half of a standard 75cl bottle, or roughly two generous glasses.

      Should I decant it?

Thirty minutes in a decanter or a wide glass will open up the cedar and violet aromatics. It is drinking well now and will also keep.

What temperature should I serve it at?

16–18°C. Twenty minutes out of the fridge on a warm day is about right.
