      The Wine

Château Labégorce sits in the southern Médoc, in the Margaux appellation, and is owned by the Perrodo family. Its roughly 70 hectares of vines average over thirty years old and are planted on a complex mosaic of silt-heavy gravel and sandy soils — the kind of patchwork terroir that rewards attention in the vineyard. The estate works with minimal intervention and precision techniques rather than heavy handling.

The 2022 is a classic Margaux blend: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Fermentation happens in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel vats, and ageing in French oak barrels of which around 40% are new — enough to build structure while keeping the fruit vivid.

      Tasting Notes

NoseExpressive blackcurrant and red cherry with violet, graphite, fresh herbs and subtle cedar.
PalateMedium to full-bodied with silky, polished tannins — juicy black fruit, floral lift and mineral freshness.
FinishLong and refined, with fine oak spice and lingering cassis.

Serve with: grilled lamb, beef, duck or aged cheeses. Drink 2027–2040 and beyond.

      Questions

      Is it ready to drink?

It will reward patience — 2027 onwards is the window. Opened earlier, give it several hours in a decanter.

      What makes it a Margaux?

The floral lift — violet over blackcurrant — and the silky tannin texture. Margaux is the most perfumed and elegant of the Médoc communes, and this shows it.

      Is it classified?

Labégorce is a Cru Bourgeois-level Margaux rather than a 1855 classed growth, which is much of why it offers what it does at the price.
