Why cucumber and rose?
The idea reportedly came to William Grant & Sons' David Stewart while sitting in his garden enjoying a cucumber sandwich and the scent of roses. Both botanicals are added post-distillation as essences, in small 500-litre batches.
Why two different stills?
A rare 1948 Carter-Head still gives lighter, more floral character, while a small 1860 pot still contributes stronger, more traditional botanicals — the two distillates are blended before the cucumber and rose are added.
Why serve it with cucumber instead of lime?
Hendrick's already contains cucumber essence, so a cucumber garnish reinforces the gin's own character rather than competing with it the way citrus would.
