Autumn Wine Guide: What to Drink as the Weather Turns

    сентябрь 01, 2026

An Autumn Wine Guide for the Turn of the Season

The standard autumn wine guide tells you to switch to red and leaves it there, which is not much use in the first week of September when it is still fifteen degrees at six in the evening. The real change is more gradual and more interesting than that, and it is driven less by temperature than by what you are eating.

Summer food is light, acidic and often cold. Autumn food is roasted, braised, earthy and served hot. Wine follows the plate, not the calendar, so the useful question is not whether it is autumn yet but what is coming out of your oven.

Do Not Abandon White Wine, Change Its Style

The most common mistake is packing the white wine away in September. What actually needs to change is the type of white you are drinking.

Summer whites are lean and high in acid, built to refresh: Pinot Grigio, Picpoul, unoaked Sauvignon Blanc. Autumn whites want texture and weight instead. Oaked Chardonnay from Burgundy or a good New World producer is the obvious one, but Chenin Blanc from the Loire or South Africa is arguably better value, with honeyed weight and enough acidity to cut through richness. Viognier brings apricot and a fuller body. Aged white Rioja, which spends time in oak, is one of the great underrated autumn wines and costs a fraction of white Burgundy.

These all suit exactly what you start cooking in September: roast chicken, mushrooms, squash, leeks, anything with cream or butter. Browse the full wine range and look at the whites before you write them off for the year.

Early Autumn Reds: Medium Bodied and Chilled

September and early October belong to the middle of the red spectrum. You want fruit, freshness and moderate tannin, not weight.

Gamay, in the form of Beaujolais, is close to perfect here. Cru Beaujolais such as Fleurie, Morgon or Brouilly gives you real structure without heaviness, and it can be served lightly chilled, which matters when the weather has not fully committed. Pinot Noir does the same job with more earth and less bright fruit. Barbera from Piedmont has high acidity and low tannin, which makes it the most food-friendly red on the shelf and remarkably good with tomato-based dishes and with sausages.

All three benefit from twenty minutes in the fridge. Lightly chilled red is standard practice across most of wine-producing Europe and a persistent blind spot in Britain.

Later Autumn: Bringing Out the Weight

By late October and November, the food has changed again and heavier wines start to make sense. This is when Rioja Reserva, Rhone Syrah, Malbec and Cabernet blends come into their own, alongside slow-cooked meat, game and root vegetables.

The pairing logic is simple enough. Tannin binds with protein and fat, so a tannic red that tastes harsh on its own becomes soft and generous alongside a piece of beef or a lamb shoulder. That is why the same bottle can seem impressive at dinner and unpleasant on the sofa afterwards.

If you are buying reds to keep for the season, the red wine collection is the place to start.

    The Temperature Problem

More autumn wine is spoiled by serving temperature than by any other single factor, and it costs nothing to fix.

Room temperature as a guideline dates from an era of unheated stone houses, where a room might be fifteen degrees. A modern British living room in November sits at twenty-one or higher, and at that temperature alcohol becomes dominant, fruit flattens out and tannin turns coarse. Most reds show best between fifteen and eighteen degrees, and lighter styles nearer thirteen.

The practical version: put red wine in the fridge for twenty minutes before you open it. Take white wine out of the fridge twenty minutes before you pour it, because most people serve white far too cold, which mutes aroma entirely. Those two habits will improve your wine drinking more than spending an extra five pounds a bottle.

Decanting, and When It Actually Helps

Decanting has a reputation for fussiness it does not deserve. It does two things: it removes sediment from older bottles, and it exposes young wine to oxygen, which softens tannin and opens up aroma.

The second is the one that matters for most autumn drinking. A young, tannic red under about ten years old benefits from thirty to sixty minutes in a decanter, or simply from being poured into a jug and back into the bottle if you do not own one. Older wines, over about fifteen years, are fragile and should be opened and poured carefully rather than aerated aggressively.

Buying for the Season Rather Than the Night

Autumn is the point in the year when it becomes worth keeping a small spread of wine at home rather than buying bottle by bottle. Six bottles covering three price points and both colours will handle almost anything that comes up: an unexpected dinner, a Sunday roast, a cold Tuesday evening.

Store them somewhere cool and dark and away from the kitchen, which is the warmest room in most flats and the worst place for a wine rack. A cupboard on an outside wall beats a shelf above the oven every time.

Whether you are stocking up or need a bottle for tonight, we deliver right across London in 30 to 45 minutes, 24 hours a day, and next day UK-wide. Have a look at the full wine selection or check our delivery areas to confirm we reach your postcode.
