Veuve Clicquot created Rich in 2015 for a purpose no other grande marque had admitted to: mixing. It is dosed considerably higher than the Yellow Label, which sounds like heresy until you understand why — the wine is meant to be poured over a glass full of ice and finished with a garnish, and a drier champagne simply disappears when you do that. Rich does not. It keeps its fruit and its backbone through the dilution, which is why the house published a set of garnishes to go with it: grapefruit zest, cucumber, pineapple, even a twist of bell pepper or a little tea.
The chocolate is Charbonnel et Walker's caramelised biscuit truffle — a milk chocolate truffle with a caramelised biscuit centre, enrobed in milk chocolate and scattered with crushed biscuit. The firm has made chocolates by hand since 1875 and still trades from the Royal Arcade on Old Bond Street. It is a sweeter, more informal register than their champagne truffles, and it suits a champagne that is itself off-duty.

It carries a much higher dosage, which makes it rounder and sweeter. That is deliberate — Rich was created to be served over ice with a garnish, where a drier champagne would thin out and lose its fruit.

No — it drinks well chilled and neat, and suits dessert or anything caramel. The ice is an option the house designed in, not an instruction.
