What is the difference between rye and bourbon?
Bourbon is at least 51% corn, which makes it sweet and round. Rye is at least 51% rye grain — this one is 100% — which makes it drier, spicier and more peppery. If you find bourbon a touch sweet, rye is the whiskey you have been looking for.
Is this a sipping whiskey or a cocktail whiskey?
Genuinely both, which is unusual at this age. Ten years of oak give it enough roundness to drink neat, and 100 proof gives it enough backbone that it does not vanish under vermouth and bitters. Most owners do both from the same bottle.
Why is 100% rye harder to make?
Rye is a difficult grain to work with — it foams heavily in the mash and is far less forgiving than corn. Most producers blend in corn or wheat to make life easier. Going all-rye and then ageing it a decade leaves nowhere for a flaw to hide.
