      The Genever

Genever is the ancestor of gin, and this is genever taken seriously. Van Wees works from an Amsterdam distillery founded in 1782, and this bottling is the product of generations of accumulated knowledge: pure, natural raw materials and time-honoured recipes built from fruits, flowers, plants, roots and seeds.

What sets it apart is the age. Fifteen years of patient maturation is extraordinary for the category — most genever is bottled young or after a few years in wood. This carries the whole history of Dutch distilling in every measure, and it drinks far closer to an aged spirit than to anything in the gin aisle.

      Tasting Notes

NoseDeep and layered, with the botanical complexity of a traditional genever recipe.
PalateRich and mellow, rounded by fifteen years of maturation.
      FinishLong and warming.

Serve with: nothing. Neat, in a tulip glass, at cellar temperature — the traditional Dutch way. A beer alongside is entirely permitted.

      Questions

      What is genever?

The Dutch malt-wine-based spirit that gin descends from. It is maltier, rounder and more characterful than London Dry, and closer in spirit to a light whisky than to modern gin.

Is fifteen years unusual for genever?

Very. Most genever is bottled young or after a few years in wood, so a fifteen-year-old bottling is genuinely rare.

      How should I drink it?

Neat and unchilled, in a tulip glass. This is a sipping spirit; mixing it would waste the fifteen years.
