How is this different from the standard bottling?
The base. Where the familiar red-ribbon bottle uses younger cognac, the Centenaire is built on XO eaux-de-vie drawn largely from Fine Champagne. The orange is still there, but it sits on top of a genuinely aged spirit rather than carrying the drink alone.
What does "Fine Champagne" mean here?
Nothing to do with sparkling wine. It is a cognac designation meaning the blend comes only from the Grande and Petite Champagne crus — the two most prized areas of the Cognac region, prized for finesse and length.
Is it a sipping drink or a mixing one?
Both, but sip it first. At this level it stands comfortably beside an XO cognac in a snifter. It makes a magnificent sidecar too, if you can bear to.
