Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon · 2023 Vintage

The new 2023 release from a family that has made Napa Valley Cabernet every year since 1972, and one of the wines that put Rutherford on the map.

      The Vintage

The 2023 draws on fruit from eight of Napa Valley's sixteen sub-appellations and is aged for 18–22 months, mostly in new French oak. Expect an open, generous nose of blackberry, cassis, dark cherry and vanilla, with ripe, plush tannins and a long finish. It is approachable now and has the structure to age. The Wagner family has made Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon every year since founding the estate in 1972 with just 240 cases.

      Questions

How does the 2023 compare with the 2022?
Both are young, ripe Napa Cabernets in the classic Caymus style. The 2022 was the estate's 50th-anniversary vintage and has now sold out; the 2023 is the current release.
Where do the grapes come from?
A range of Napa's sub-appellations, from cooler Coombsville in the south to warmer Calistoga in the north, plus Rutherford and Oakville — valley-floor fruit gives lushness, hillside fruit gives structure.
      Is Caymus still family-owned?
Yes — it remains 100% family-run, with the next generation of the Wagner family now involved in the farming and winemaking.
