Virginie de Valandraud 2018 — blackberry, mocha and licorice from Jean-Luc Thunevin’s trailblazing Valandraud estate.
Valandraud is one of the most famous stories in modern Bordeaux — founded in 1989 by Jean-Luc Thunevin, who built a tiny garage operation into a Saint-Émilion benchmark and changed how the region thought about winemaking along the way. Virginie de Valandraud carries that house style in a more accessible form.
The 2018 blends Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in oak barrels. It is silky and generous: ripe black fruit layered with mocha, cedar and licorice, dark chocolate on the nose, and tannins that are strikingly smooth for a wine of this concentration. The half bottle makes it an easy luxury for an evening in.
Serve with: grilled lamb chops, ribeye steak, mushroom ragù with pappardelle, duck with cherry sauce, aged Gouda or cured meats.

It was the original “garage wine” — a tiny, obsessively made Saint-Émilion started in 1989 that rose to the appellation’s top ranks.
Yes — 2018 was a ripe vintage and the tannins are smooth. Forty-five minutes of air brings out the mocha and licorice.
