      The Wine

This is the second wine of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, one of the most celebrated estates in Pauillac. Second wines are made from the parcels and barrels that do not go into the grand vin, and they exist for a simple reason: they let you drink the estate’s style, its terroir and its winemaking, years before the first wine is ready.

The 2020 blends Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc and is aged in oak barrels. Compared with the grand vin it is deliberately more open — supple tannins, a core of dark fruit, and enough freshness to keep it lively. Approachable now, with the classic Pauillac signature of blackcurrant, graphite and violet still very much present.

      Tasting Notes

      Questions

      What is a second wine?

A separate bottling made by the same estate from fruit and barrels not selected for the grand vin. Same team, same vineyards, more approachable style and price.

Can I drink it now or should I cellar it?

Both. It is built to be enjoyable young, but the 2020 vintage has the structure to reward a few years in the cellar.

      Should I decant it?

Yes — an hour in a decanter lets a young Pauillac open up properly.
