      The Wine

Château Balestard la Tonnelle is one of Saint-Émilion’s long-established names, with a history stretching back centuries — the estate is famous enough to have been mentioned in verse by the fifteenth-century poet François Villon, whose lines still appear on the label. The 2012 is a Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend aged in French oak barrels.

Right Bank Bordeaux of this age is about texture as much as flavour. The wine is full-bodied but smooth, the tannins long since resolved, and the fruit has picked up the leather, tobacco and earth notes that come with a decade in bottle. It is ready now.

      Questions

      Is it ready to drink?

Yes. At over a decade old it is in a mature, savoury phase and needs no further cellaring.

      Should I decant it?

Decant gently for 30 minutes. Older Bordeaux can throw sediment, so pour off the last centimetre.

What temperature should I serve it at?

16–18°C — cool room temperature rather than warm.
