Balestard La Tonnelle 2012 — ripe dark fruit, tobacco and cedar, with the savoury depth only age can give.
Château Balestard la Tonnelle is one of Saint-Émilion’s long-established names, with a history stretching back centuries — the estate is famous enough to have been mentioned in verse by the fifteenth-century poet François Villon, whose lines still appear on the label. The 2012 is a Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend aged in French oak barrels.
Right Bank Bordeaux of this age is about texture as much as flavour. The wine is full-bodied but smooth, the tannins long since resolved, and the fruit has picked up the leather, tobacco and earth notes that come with a decade in bottle. It is ready now.
Serve with: grilled steak, roast lamb, beef stew, game birds, charcuterie or aged Gouda.
