Château Léoville Las Cases, at the northern edge of Saint-Julien beside the Pauillac boundary, has centuries of history and a standing at the very top of the appellation. The 2018 is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated (80%) with Cabernet Franc (11%) and Merlot (9%), aged largely in new oak barrels (90%).
This is a powerful, structured wine: concentrated dark fruit over firm, well-integrated tannins, with spice, tobacco and a crushed-rock minerality that runs into a very long finish. The half bottle is a clever way to taste a legendary estate young — halves evolve a little faster, so the 2018’s depths open sooner.
Serve with: grilled ribeye, lamb chops, braised short ribs, rich stews or hearty mushroom dishes.
