Ridgeview has been making sparkling wine on the South Downs since 1995, and this family-owned Sussex estate is one of the names that established England as a serious sparkling region. The Blanc de Blancs is made exclusively from 100% estate-grown Chardonnay — hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed, with primary fermentation in stainless steel, then secondary fermentation in bottle and a minimum four years ageing on lees in underground cellars. Disgorged November 2021.
The 2016 was an exceptional vintage here: a cool spring, smaller yields and a long, sunny ripening period gave concentrated fruit intensity with the vibrant natural acidity that cool-climate English Chardonnay does better than almost anywhere. Dosage is 8 g/l. This is English Sparkling Wine, not Champagne — a distinct category with its own identity, and this is a benchmark for it.
Serve with: oysters and shellfish, smoked salmon, or as an aperitif. Drink now through 2030.
